I enjoyed the M3 vs. 335is conversation. However, I have to say that some of the arguments baffled me a bit. I own a 2009 E90 M3 and I am far from paying $8000/year on insurance. I pay about $1500. You claim to have come up with this number because that’s what a friend who lives in NYC pays for his M3. I am pretty sure that the insurance premium for your friend is based on the driver and not the car. I bet that friend would pay a pretty hefty premium for a 335is too.

You also comment mainly on how to the power of a 335i can be easily upped match the M3's for less money. However, a big difference between the two is also in terms of handling. Which the 335is may actually do decent job from what I have read.

I agree, the product itself is the important thing to most enthusiasts. However, the "Ultimate Driving Machine" slogan is so universally recognizable and polarizing that it seems like a sign of retreat to put it away.

Everything is possible. I'm not sure if enough people cared about the image that the Army's old motto gave. All and all their just mottos. I think most people don't put any thought into a motto. My e46 is still an ultimate driving machine whether BMW changes its corporate motto or not.

I think the quality, power, and refined mechanics of the product is truly what grabs the attention of an enthusiast.
